The feeling of aloneness hits different on Valentine’s Day because the reminder that ‘no one loves you’, ‘you are special to no one’, ‘you really don’t matter to anybody’, and ‘you will be alone forever’ is right in your face on this very day, which is a lie by the way.
Everyone and their grandma gets flowers, texts, date night, jewelry and so on, and there’s you. Doing nothing. Being no one to no one. Just there. Being reminded of what you’ve already known. That you are so single you have to talk to yourself in your room just to confirm to yourself that you are real and can still talk.
Valentine’s Day is a memorial day for the saint the day was named after, St. Valentine. There have been many stories about this Saint, who he was and what he did that made him an unforgettable legend.
Some stories say St. Valentine defied an emperor who outlawed marriage for young men because he believed unmarried young men make better soldiers and St. Valentine saw this as unfair and kept on performing marriage ceremonies for young lovers. His secret defiance was discovered and the Emperor ordered for his head.
Other Legend said it was another Valentine who was also beheaded or another one who was in prison and fell in love with his Jailer’s daughter who visited him while in prison. He sent out a card greeting her with the word, ‘from your valentine’.
Which of these Legends were true?
Who knows? And it doesn’t matter because the message is the same and rings true.
February 14th is Valentine’s Day, in memory of St. Valentine, and based on the stories of the Valentines known in history, that day means a day of defiance, Justice, Fairness, Courage, and Love.
You see? Where there is love, true unadulterated love, there is Defiance, Justice, Fairness, and Courage.
Defiance means resistance, open disobedience.
So Valentine’s Day isn’t about having someone but being someone to others,
The question is, how can you be someone’s Valentine?
How can you show courage, Justice, Fairness, and Defiance to someone, someplace or something?
How can you defy what isn’t just, fair, or courageous?
Look around you, what is unjust and unfair that you have to defy to bring a smile to someone’s face?
Go do that on Valentine’s Day.
The interesting part? It can be you who needs justice, fairness, and defiance.
Maybe, you’ve not been just or fair to yourself.
Maybe, you’ve not cared for you.
Maybe, you’ve not put you first in a while.
Maybe, you’ve been cruel to you.
It’s time you defy yourself and say ‘NO MORE’.
This Valentine’s Day is about me.
I have to be kind to me.
I have to put me first.
And, I am in this with you.
I, Doris, is in this with you.
No Valentine.
Because I am my own Valentine.
I choose to put me first.
I choose to defy me and care for me and no one else today.
I choose to be just and fair to me by finding out my needs and fulfilling them for myself.
What would you want your lover to have done for you today?
Go Do it for you.
It’s not a day to pity party,
Wish on what you don’t have, or
Hate on those who have what you desire.
It’s a day to give to those who want something you can offer.
A day to give to yourself what you’d want to receive from another.
And you don’t have to pretend it came from an imaginary lover. It’s ok if it came from you.
Own it.
And we will not stop there, we’d go beyond that.
We’d make every day Valentine’s Day. It’s really a pathetic life to live if you only celebrate love and romance on one day. Even if you say, ‘It’s like your birthday’, then I will ask you, why are you celebrating life only on your birthday?
Make every day Valentine’s Day.
Every day is a good day to be Courageous, Just, Fair and defy whatever isn’t Courageous, Just, and Fair.
After all, Defiance Justice, and Fairness is love.
You know that thing you want to do and have been putting off with so many excuses even though in your heart, you are really just afraid?
Do it.
Launch it.
As a Valentine’s Day gift to you.
It’s your act of Courage,
Which makes it an act of love to you.
Happy Valentine’s Defiance Day!
